Our Mission
At Kamoa, we are building Africa's digital financial infrastructure to connect banks, telecom operators, and platforms with the data and technology they need to serve more people. We believe that cutting-edge, data-powered technology is the key to financial access and education in emerging markets. Our vision is to redefine financial inclusion through innovative tech products that are seamless and perfectly adapted to local usage.
Your Responsibilities
You will lead Kamoa's entire Data function, structured across three verticals:
Data Engineering — the foundations: pipelines, ingestion, data quality and availability. You own the robustness, scalability, and quality of our data pipelines.
Data Science / AI / ML — the engine: AI agents and ML systems for scoring, recommendation and marketing applications. You drive the development, deployment, performance and continuous improvement of our proprietary models.
Business Intelligence — the visible impact: actionable insights, dashboards and reports. You own the quality and delivery of strategic business and product insights.
Data sits at the centre of every strategic decision. You will be the voice of data in conversations about growth, partnerships, and new markets.
You will be hands-on, and manage an existing team of data engineers, scientists, analysts with the mandate to maintain a fast pace.
Define and execute the Data strategy: You don't wait to be handed a roadmap. You build Kamoa's data vision for the next 12 to 24 months, defend and execute it. This includes infrastructure decisions, expanding ML capabilities to new markets and developing new data products.
Power both product platforms: our Embedded Finance Platform and our Marketplace.
Contribute to proprietary research: Kamoa conducts in-house research on models for African finance. You contribute to this research agenda, in connection with our academic network, and help turn research into deployable products.
Requirements
Experience: 4+ years in data roles, including in a leadership position managing a cross-functional team spanning data engineering and data science
Credit scoring & alternative data: You have built or significantly improved scoring and recommender systems for populations in an emerging market context. You understand the challenges of bias, adverse selection, and post-deployment monitoring.
Telecom & Mobile Wallet data: Hands-on experience with CDR, airtime, geolocation, or device data — or a demonstrated ability to get up to speed on this type of source very quickly.
Statistics & ML expertise: Solid foundation in statistics and ML theory. Proven hands-on experience building with LLMs (prompt engineering, RAG, embeddings, fine-tuning, agent orchestration etc.).
MLOps & production: You have deployed models to production, monitored them, and retested them. A model that lives in a Jupyter notebook does not exist for you.
Data engineering experience: You are comfortable with pipelines, data quality management, and architecture decisions in environments where data is messy, sparse, or unstructured.
Strategic communication: You can present complex findings to the CEO, bank executives, or telco partners. You know when to go deep and when to stay at the level of the business decision.
Stack: Python, TypeScript, SQL, AWS. BI tooling. Experience with serverless cloud architectures is a plus.
Languages: English required. Bilingual French / English is highly preferred.
Key Details
Location: Hybrid / Remote
Compensation & benefits: Competitive salary, flexible leave policy, and various benefits & perks
The team: You will be joining a group of builders creating the data layer for African finance. We are mission-driven, data-obsessed, and deeply committed to making finance invisible and seamless for the end user.
You Are the Ideal Candidate If…
You own gaps, not just your vertical. You don't stay within the boundaries of your vertical. When you identify a gap, — you fill it, or you find someone who can.
You move faster than everyone else. You don't produce roadmaps to discuss roadmaps. You identify what's blocking, propose a solution quickly, and have already started executing before the follow-up meeting. In a fast-moving African market, velocity is a competitive advantage.
You pull teams up. You are the one who sets the pace. You don't accept half-finished deliverables. You give direct feedback and set clear standards.
You turn data into decisions. Your value is not measured by the number of models you train or dashboards you build, but by the impact they have on the product performance or partner's decision to scale the deployment.
You are comfortable operating in complex African environments. Data is fragmented, sometimes missing, sometimes unreliable. Connectivity is intermittent. Partners have their own technical constraints. You don't wait for perfect conditions to deliver — you deliver with what you have and build better with every iteration.
You are bilingual and cross-cultural. You know how to speak to an engineer, a bank risk officer, and a telco Head of Mobile Money in the same afternoon — with the right level of detail, the right posture, and the right outcome. Ideally, you move between English and French without friction.
How to Apply
Send your CV to recruitment@kamoa.app with a short paragraph describing the model or data system you are most proud of — and the concrete impact it had on a business decision or product metric.
